The Lonliest Sailor
Paul Iannotti
I was a nightwatchman scanning the sky
The lonliest sailor was I
Stormy the weather and misty my eye
The lonliest sailor alive
By night I must talk to my spyglass alone
By day I must sleep while they’re sharing the rum
One night I harkened an unearthly cry
A voice like an angel up high
It sang to me “who art thou scanning the sky?”
“The lonliest sailor” said I
Then over the bowsprit and onto the deck
The lovliest creature my gaze ever met
Her hair black as coral her features so fine
Her movements were graceful as well
Her voluptuous body a contrast to mine
Especially her glistening tail
She whispered of watching me under the moonlight
With tears rolling down my nose night after night
I begged her to spare me her sorrowful cry
A sailor as lonely as I
She drew herself closer and to my surprise
Her eyes were as lonely as mine
By day now I sleep and that suits me just fine
By night I’m the luckiest sailor alive
