NEAH BAY, Wash. (AP) — The Makah Tribal Council on Sunday denounced the killing of a California gray whale that was harpooned and shot several times off Washington’s coast, calling it “a blatant violation of our law” and promising to prosecute those responsible.

But one of the men suspected in the killing told a newspaper Sunday that he was “feeling kind of proud” and whaling is “in the blood.”

    I am all for preserving the beliefs and traditions of any given culture, but somehow I don’t see the shooting of any whale with a high powered rifle apart of any culture.

    I agree — although many don’t. I think some whaling is OK, using human-powered craft and weapons. In this case, a powerboat and a 50 caliber machine gun don’t really count. You need to give the quarry at least a bit of a chance.
