Double amputee Nadya Vessey will soon be able to swim like a mermaid with a specially-made tail that will let her propel herself through the water.
The keen swimmer is to be fitted with the “mermaid-style” tail made by the same special effects team behind blockbuster Lord of the Rings and King Kong.
Nadya was born with a condition that meant her legs would never develop properly, but despite having her first leg amputated at the age of seven has has continued swimming throughout her life.
The tail will be moulded on to a pair of wetsuit shorts to make it easy to put on and take off. Nadya says it will allow her to propel herself through the water with an undulating movement as if she was a mermaid.
“I’m thinking I’ll power on a bit with it, so that will be great.” she told New Zealand’s Sunday Star Times. Nadya says she’s even thinking of completing the swimming section of a triathlon using her new tail.
Work on the new tail will begin at the start of next year and Nadya has told the special effects team that she wants the finished tail to be both “beautiful and practical”.
“I began to feel a bit embarrassed about it. But then everybody else got so excited so I thought, ‘Oh, I’ll just go with it and see what happens’.”
“So I really have no idea what to expect but it’s going to be fun.”

Mermaids are real, even if they are pretty or ugly. I don’t care about the amount of people who dress up and pose to a camera to prove that mermaids are real. That’s not how it works. Just to let you know you don’t have to see a mermaid in order to know that they are real! My cousin and I have always believed that someday there will be a BIG discovery about mermaids and so we’re just waiting patiently. Anyway, you can make your own tail or fin, whatever, with cloth and some nice sewing skills and some plastic for the bottom flippers. Iam real mermaid and do have magic my tail is purple my shirt is scale and purple to i can change my tail and shirt to purple or blue my tail and my shirt sparkle and glitter but only turn into a merboy when i touch water and 4 seconds later blue or purple sparkles come around me and i turn into one i get ro chose which color i just have to think it also i control water i can heat and freeze it i am not lying i am a real merboy (oh no my sister is here and a clumsy girl she is drinking WATER!!! oh no she triped on her shoe and spilled it all over me here it goes now im a merboy and it is hard to sit while on a wodin cheer with a sparkiling tail wo wo wooooooo ouch i fell well better get dryed off now and get my legs back.PS iam NOT lying!!!

this is to aquagurl45 my powers are not just those i can also have a magic clear buble that i make that i can move around and people see me as human the bad thing is that it only lasts 6 min i also can talk to sea life and control objects my last 2 powers are i can kind of mind controle people i look in there eys and say or think “water water all around me you will obey what you see which is me” alsdo i can control weather but that uses a lot of energy i get very tired after i do that thoe i dont do that a lot and also i was telling you that i fell because i did not want to disaper like that off line so that is why i told you that but i am a semimer that meens i am able to be human but also a merboy. but i am still i regular kid i go to school have family i have pets a dog a hamster and a guine pig. i like to watch tv play games and play out sid. but i got my powers and merboyniss because my ansester was known to have been a mermaid and one a merboy so i was the person or semi mer in the family to inherite his genes but i dont know his and her name thoe well i have to go to sleep now in a regular bed see i have regular things even thoe i am a merboy well bye and goodnight!.
