Pesce di venerdì

Mosaic from Pompeii.   We’ll be in Sorrento in late April if any of our kind Italian readers wants to offer us a ride to Capri for the day.

Let’s go fly a kite

Or use your halyard…

All from this SA thread.

Today’s sea-nymph

seanymph.jpg

Haliai
Quite simply, sea nymphs. They show up under this name in a random play by Sophocles and in Callimachus’ Hymn to Artemis (read it!), but doesn’t seem to be as commonly used as the more general “nymph” or the more specific “Nereid” or “Oceanid”. Haliai comes from the word for “sea” and also means “salt”

Link to more about different types of nymphs and individuals.  Even more about haliai  here.

Norseboat Seaworthiness

I took the small craft capsize and seaworthiness test on the Small Craft Advisor site and the Norseboat scored a 116, as seen below.   What’s your trailerable sailboat rate?

Chubby is for sale

Chubby, Bill Teplow’s West Wight Potter 19 is for sale, as I found out doing my usual scan of Craigslist:

Custom West Wight Potter 19 “Chubby”. Seaworthy, fast, stiff pocket cruiser. Hawaii, Alaska, Seattle-Berkeley vet. 5000 sea miles. Jim Antrim designed rig. New Ballenger spars, standing rigging. 300 sq ft asymmetrical on retractable sprit, custom Pineapple main, 3 reef points, 2 jibs. Reinforced hull. Custom composite carbon keel, 360# lead bulb. Reliable 5hp outboard. Raymarine autopilot. Recent bottom job. Berkeley upwind slip. 3 days free lessons. Sail hard, sail cheap, sail now. $9000 firm.

This boat has had some remarkable voyages, as documented in Small Craft Advisor (issues 19+20), particularly his trip from California to Hawaii in 2002.  Your chance to own a piece of small boat history!

Whaling-in the New Year

The Searavens celebrated New Year’s Day by chartering S/V Mungo Jerrie, a Catalina 320, for a whale watching mission off Santa Cruz.  No whales were spotted, but we enjoyed the sun, nice breeze, calm seas, and 50+ nm visibility.

Bruddah Nappy from the SC Outrigger Canoe Club was out with another OC-6 on a training paddle.  This boat is named, I’m sure, for Nappy Napoleon, the Hawaiian paddling legend.  You can see his club’s boats here.
