Today’s mermaid — Mme. Gitana

gitanaride-graphic.jpg

On February 28 the 110′ Gitana 13 Sailed under the Golden Gate en-route to demolishing the previous Route de ‘Le Or (NY to SF) by 14 days hours and 43 minutes, previously set by fellow countryman Yves Parlier aboard the 60 ‘ monohull Aquitaine Innovations in 1998. Gitana skipper Lionel Lemonchois is no stranger to The Gold race, having crewed on previous NY to SF races with Parlier in 1998 and with Isabelle Autissier in 1994. The last few weeks the big cat has been getting getting groomed at a local boat yard in preparation for yet another record attempt, SF to Yokohama Japan starting Saturday, weather permitting.

Below, Gitana 13 heads for the Gate on her way to a likely record-setting run, San Francisco – Yokohama.

After a very successful race in 2007 we will  start the second 1000-mile Doublehanded Race the 8th of June.

The 1000-Mile Doublehanded is perhaps the most challenging race of the northernmost North Sea. This rugged competition combines long-distant sailing with serious competitive racing. If you love a good challenge – and want a great excuse for a wild vacation – register now.

The 1000-Mile Doublehanded 2008 consists of 5 legs between Holland , UK (Newcastle). Norway (Bergen) and the Shetland Islands (Lerwick) – and finishes in Newcastle.
1.   Scheveningen  –  Newcastle    (08 June 2008)
2.   Newcastle  –  Bergen    (12 June 2008)
3.   Bergen  –  Lerwick    (18 June 2008)
4.   Lerwick  –  Bergen    (22 June 2008)
5.   Bergen  –  Newcastle

One for Tillerman — Laser gets pulled by big waves under the pier in Santa Barbara.  Thanks to Sailing Anarchy for the find.
