Here’s one for Gavin — Thames Barge (I think) with big honkin’ leeboards — they’re bigger than a lot of dinghys!

    She’s not a Thames barge, which usually has a sprit rig, but a Humber Keel from Yorkshire. See http://nationalhistoricships.org.uk/index.cfm/event/getVessel/vref/1834 for more, plus a picture of Daybreak under topsail.

    Chris P’s right on the money - though I can see you might confuse them. There aren’t too many keels around, for one thing!

    Unlike the fore-and-aft sprit rig with a tiny mizzen arrangement of a Thames barge, a keel has a square sail said to have been inherited from Viking invaders.
