The Mermaid – a short film by Alexander Petrov

The Mermaid is the latest film by Alexander Petrov (The Cow, Dream of a Ridiculous Man), a Moscow-based animator who is known for the delicate style of his oil paint on glass animation technique. This 10-minute film is a haunting tale of an old monk and his young novice who live by the sea. As the story unfolds, we learn that many years ago, the old man betrayed his bride and she committed suicide. The Mermaid was awarded the grand prize at the Cinanima `97 Animation Festival in Portugal and a special jury prize at Annecy `97.

Great scene of guys melting tar and caulking the a lapstrake rowing boat (a faering?), too.

    Thanks for posting this!

Petrov’s “Mermaid” seems based on Dargomyzhsky’s opera “Rusalka” (“drowned maiden”) which is loosely based on Pushkin’s incomplete poem of the same name.

In the opera, and in the animation, the Rusalka is a woman who, having given herself to a prince, is jilted as he marries another woman. She is present at the wedding. Pushkins poem is more about the seduction and death of the hermit, and doesn’t bother with this history.

Traditionally, Rusalka are sort of undead: woman who die before their time; women who commit suicide because they are jilted by their lovers; unmarried women who are pregenant. They are allowed to prperly die when their death is avenged. There are many other traditional characteristics of the rusalka in Petrov’s film.

Very nice little movie. I like the part where the mermaid was catching the fish and the part where she snorted at the old man. The ending made me almost cry though….
