Mermaid Guitar

mermaid-guitar.jpg

Legendary guitar builder Andy Manson, father of Led Zeppelin’s instantly recognisable tripleneck guitar has put his ultimate creation “The Mermaid” up for sale exclusively on Shop4thelot.com, vowing to donate half the proceeds to charity.

Taking just under thee years to build, Andy has decided to sell his work of art to the highest bidder, looking to raise six figures and donate half to charity Harvest Help, an organisation supporting communities in rural Africa, helping them with sustainable farming projects and increasing self-reliance.

Andy said, “As you can imagine, with the time, effort and materials used in her construction, she is worth a considerable sum. As I stand to make a lot of money from her, I want her existence to benefit others—not just myself and the winning bidder. Naturally, I would love to see her go to a guitar player though.”

Pirate Jenny - Black Flag

Pirate Jenny raises a Black Flag at Berbatti’s Pan, Portland, 1999.

This is not my favorite song of theirs, but it is the only video I could find on the web from The Greatest Pirate Band Ever.

A cure for Hump Day

Pirate performers The Musical Blades invite you to Drink, Drink, Drink.  I heard these guys first on Bilgemunky Radio, they are really great!

Power pirate podcast

Yarr…  good news for all pirate and nautical music enthusiasts.  Bilgemunky Radio, formerly a webcast affair that was less than easy to catch, is now available as a podcast.  It’s a fine, fine thing, and ye’ may lay to that.  She’s not up on the iTunes Store podcast directory yet, but you can copy the RSS links and paste into iTunes or your favorite music player.

Capt. Bilge, your pirate radio station DJ, is careful to get full permissions for all artists presented.  And the best part, the podcasts are really, really long — 2 or 3 hours long, 50 tracks or more.  Great for that all night drinking or boatbuilding binge out in the shed.

Summer’s the Worst

Sailor looks for love and finds girl. Girl has a secret, she is a….you know…

Michael Leviton opened for They Might Be Giants at most of the Beardo 2006 shows. One of his songs, “Summer’s The Worst”, appears on TMBG Podcast 5B, where I first heard him.  His newest album, My Favorite Place to Drown is available on iTunes.

From Florida, The Alaskan Pirate & His Salty Seamen keep up the Pirate Core tradition.  Too bad they don’t tour the West Coast!

The Lonliest Sailor

2401.jpg

The Lonliest Sailor
Paul Iannotti

I was a nightwatchman scanning the sky
The lonliest sailor was I
Stormy the weather and misty my eye
The lonliest sailor alive
By night I must talk to my spyglass alone
By day I must sleep while they’re sharing the rum

One night I harkened an unearthly cry
A voice like an angel up high
It sang to me “who art thou scanning the sky?”
“The lonliest sailor” said I
Then over the bowsprit and onto the deck
The lovliest creature my gaze ever met

Her hair black as coral her features so fine
Her movements were graceful as well
Her voluptuous body a contrast to mine
Especially her glistening tail
She whispered of watching me under the moonlight
With tears rolling down my nose night after night

I begged her to spare me her sorrowful cry
A sailor as lonely as I
She drew herself closer and to my surprise
Her eyes were as lonely as mine
By day now I sleep and that suits me just fine
By night I’m the luckiest sailor alive

I feel better than James Brown

1_a_dolphin.jpg

When we were in love, I pretended you didn’t exist
That way, I loved you more

You suggested we get married and move into a house
I suggested that we jump overboard
          and live underwater
in the lost city of Atlantis
          where mermaids sing
and tuxedoed dolphins bring you breakfast
