Real pirates of the caribbean

qpirate_p2_s.jpg“Virtually all of our pirate imagery comes from a single circle of pirates who knew one another, shared a common base in the Bahamas, and operated for a very brief period: 1715 to 1725. This gang – including Blackbeard, Sam Bellamy of Whydah fame, the female pirates Mary Read and Anne Bonny, and the gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet – provided the inspiration for the great pirates of fiction, from Long John Silver and Captain Hook to Captain Blood and Jack Sparrow.”

Pirate cocktail: Dark and Stormy

Arrrr….  keeps off the scurvy, and keeps UP morale.

In a large sturdy glass, muddle 1 lime cut into eighths.  Add ice, and pour in 1 jigger of good quality dark rum.  (Pusser’s would be an appropriate choice.)  Fill to top with ginger beer.

wench.JPG

On a whim some months ago, I became a charter subscriber (or plank owner, as the pyrates would say) to The Pyrates Way magazine.  Each issue features articles on pirate history, lore, literature, music, film, food, and drink (lots of drink).  Plus, pictures of wenches, always popular.  Check it out!

Lego Pirates

It’s nice how they can tell a whole story without a lot of gabby exposition.  Yarr!

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (RT link) grossed $126.5M on 4362 screens last weekend, which must certainly be a record for a pirate movie.   What did you think of it?
